Interview With CoderQwerty

JDHalliday        CoderQwerty

Elastic: Hello.

Coder: Hello.

Elastic: Thanks for coming today. You must be busy.

Coder: I’m not actually, the update I released yesterday went smoothly. I have a bit of free time now.

Elastic: Update for what, exactly?

Coder: My main game at the moment, Blood & Iron.

Elastic: What is this game about?

Coder: It’s a FPS that’s based around the Napoleonic Wars. Players use muskets, swords and cannons to battle on historical and fictional maps.

Elastic: How long have you been working on it?

Coder: I started work on the weapons last year, and spent about three months at the start of this year making the game itself. It was released just after Easter.

Elastic: How popular has it been?

Coder: When it first released it may have reached the front page, but I can’t be sure since I was was asleep when it started to get popular. It definitely reached the second page, but only stayed there for a day or so. Now it has a stable player count of about 20k players a week.

Elastic: Have you made any other popular games?

Coder: I did make Contamination back in 2009, which has around 1.2 million visits at the moment. It gets around 2k players per week now. Aside from that, this is my only popular game.

Elastic: To a different topic, how long have you been on ROBLOX?

Coder: I’ve been on Roblox for almost seven years now, I joined in September 2008.

Elastic: When do you think Roblox was at it’s peak?

Coder: I think it’s the best it has ever been right now, and it’ll only continue to get better as they add more features. I’m especially excited for the new lighting features they’re slowly adding.

Elastic: What kind of games do you like to play when you’re not making your own games?
Coder: I mostly enjoy playing FPSs, but I haven’t played much CoD or Battlefield. I’ve been playing a bit of ‘Dirty Bomb’ recently, and I’m about to break 1,000 hours in ‘Team Fortress 2’. I’ve also got a few hundred hours in ‘Skyrim’ and ‘Mount & Blade: Warband’, both of which are greatly enhanced by their modding communities.

Elastic: When did you first start getting into creating games on ROBLOX?

Coder: I started learning how to script just a few months after joining, mostly through the Wiki and by editing free models. So I’ve been making games for pretty much my entire time on Roblox.

Elastic: Are you into any other type of coding?

Coder: I’ve made a few small bits of software in Visual Studio, but that’s mostly because my college (British college, which is the same as American high school) course was taught in VB.net.

Elastic: Do you do any animating?

Coder: Only on Roblox. I’m currently converting all of my weapons over to Roblox’s own system, as it’s a lot smoother than my current one.

Elastic: Why did you decide to make the game about the Napoleonic Wars?

Coder: Well, my friend (SMPeople) made me a musket model. I decided to go ahead and script it, and everything else just followed along. I had to decide whether to use the tech for a group or a game, and I decided a game would be better for me.
Elastic: What was the first game you ever made on ROBLOX?

Coder: I honestly can’t remember. However, it was probably Contamination. All of my other places before that were just small scripting experiments or builds, nothing that could be considered a game. Contamination started out like that, and then grew into an actual game.

Elastic: Do you think you would make another game like Blood & Iron later? Maybe about The Revolutionary War or War of 1812?

Coder: I’d prefer to make a game that wasn’t as similar as B&I. Also, I doubt many Americans would like me recreating the Burning of Washington. It’s possible that I’d make a naval battling game, or a Napoleonic RTS. However, these are just ideas.

Elastic: Would you do something more modern like WWII?

Coder: WWII has already been done well by a lot of developers. Part of the reason I made B&I was because there was no Napoleonic FPS on Roblox at that time (that I know of). There was PspJohn1’s American Civil War game, but that’s hardly authentic.

Elastic: At what point would you start a new game? When will you feel done with B&I?

Coder: When it comes to deciding what game to make, I really don’t do much planning. For instance, I decided to add the Duchy of Nassau on a whim after reading about their regiments at the Battle of Waterloo. However, I know that I definitely want to add musicians, sieges, Austria, and Russia to B&I before moving on.

Elastic: I can see myself charging at enemies with a fife, blaring “Taps”. How many battles do you think you want to have?

Coder: I tend to add 2 or 3 maps for each new faction, so that’ll be about 6 new maps minimum. However, I’m hoping to add more maps over time.

Elastic: Could you give a quick summary of how the game works?

Coder: There’s only one game mode at the moment, which is a team elimination mode. Teams of 12 players fight as infantry, skirmishers, cavalry or artillery. One team has to either kill all of the enemy team, or force them to surrender.

Elastic: Okay, rapid fire time. Donate?

Coder: If I donated to one random person, I’d have to donate to anyone who asked. So, no.

Elastic: Favorite hat?

Coder: My Bluesteel Domino Crown, which I got out of a gift.

Elastic: Favorite ROBLOX game?

Coder: I actually don’t play many Roblox games. Probably CoR 5, or any of Wingman8’s games.

Elastic: Favorite non-ROBLOX game?

Coder: TF2 or Skyrim.

Elastic: What aspect of B&I are you most proud of?
Coder: Definitely the authenticism.

Elastic: That’s all I can think of at the moment. Anything you want to say?

Coder: It’s a bit cliche, but I’d like to thank the people who’ve helped me make B&I.
ImperialBlood, who made most of the uniforms.
IronBrigade, whose manual of arms and knowledge of the era have been extremely helpful.
SMPeople, who made the original musket model.
Cravitus, who made the sword model.

Coder:  Thanks for interviewing me!

Elastic: Thank you for coming!

Interview With helpfuljordan3150

INTERVIEW WITH helpfuljordan3150

Animal: Welcome!

Jordan: Hi ^.^

Animal: How are you today?

Jordan: I’m doing fine, and you?

Animal: Great, since I got another interview. It’s been awhile since the last one. So, tell us what you do on Roblox.

Jordan: I’m not “famous” or anything of the sort, but I usually hang around the forums, build some games, and occasionally make some YouTube videos not strictly tailored to ROBLOX.

Animal: Sounds cool. I know how you feel without being famous, as matter famous people as I interview it doesn’t make me more noticed for some reason. Anyways, what’s your favorite Roblox hat on the catalog?

Jordan: That’s a tough one :P My favorite hat on ROBLOX that I do not own, sadly enough is the Domino Crown.

Animal: Fortunately I own my favorite hat. Which would be Yellow Banded Top Hat. What’s your favorite gear?

Jordan: Hmm, also a tough one… It’s a free gear that comes with OBC called the “Midas Glove”. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, but the reason behind that is because I can give everyone high fives. :P

Animal: I’ve heard of it. I even once geared myself it. One of the blocks that come out got stuck in someone’s neck and they got flung everywhere. Very deadly gear, if you know how to use its blocks as death. Next question! Who’s your favorite Roblox developer(s)?

Jordan: My absolute favorite developer on ROBLOX is Clonetrooper1019, he’s such a cool dude :D. He also makes some really neat scripts.

Animal: He has a whole different side on Twitter. Hmmm. Whats your favorite Roblox game so far?

Jordan: Yes, that’s true he is a very different person on Twitter, but I think he’s just more open there, as he cannot be on ROBLOX. Expressing feelings/cursing and such. My favorite game on ROBLOX is Terror Town by Hunte922, a unoriginal game, but done so very well. I do go from different games, as I can’t just choose that one to play, a recent game came out called “Mirror’s Edge: Shadows of November” It’s also really fun.

Animal: Lately I have been jumping from Bunny Islands, Work at a Pizza Play, Natural Disaster Survival and whatever other games I like. I never really play anything new. Except for Bunny Island which is still a little new. What’s your favorite color?

Jordan: My favorite color is Red (:

Animal: If you saw my character on Roblox you’d clearly see it’s yellow. Three yellow hats and a yellow shirt. Now where do I get a yellow face? What’s your favorite Roblox update so far and would you suggest any new ones?

Jordan: Your look is so unique! It’s a really cool one ^.^. If I had to choose one update in particular it’d have to be Dynamic Lighting, it really changed the way ROBLOX looked at the time and gave ROBLOX a whole new experience. I’ve been wanting an update for quite a while, once in which you can search through your inventory for hats, gears, faces, T-Shirts, etc.

Animal: There’s an extension for that. I used to have it, it’s very great. Even though I only have 8 pages of hats it still helps to find them. For the dynamic lighting, I remember back before it was out. Games got so much better. Now I can’t stand not having dynamic shadows on either. Gives the game a really nice look.

Jordan: Well, with me having 22 pages of hats, it’s really hard for me to find one that I want to wear. Same goes with shirts and other things. Yeah, dynamic lighting is super cool! I love it (: I didn’t know there was an extension for that. I’ll have to check it out some time.

Animal: I always try not to buy too much stuff. But I always end up buying something. What’s your favorite material?

Jordan: I too said the same thing when I made helpfuljordan3150. I ended up buying too many though :P This isn’t my first account. I used to share one with my brother. The account was named Tommy02, but unfortunately my brother changed the password then didn’t play for a couple years and ended up forgetting it himself.

Animal: So, how’s it like to be a moderator in PhireFox’s group?

Jordan: It’s an experience, I do have to say. Being friends with Phire is really cool. He’s a role model to me, pretty much. So being a moderator in his group is really exciting (:

Animal: I really hope he enters the Bloxy Awards. I bet he has what it takes to win.

Jordan: I too believe so, if I’m not mistaken he won in 2013 or 2014? He was so happy :P He does have the potential, i’m just afraid he doesn’t really enjoy making videos anymore.

Animal: I remember on one of his videos he said that he does like to make the videos, it’s just the subscribers he doesn’t care about. He finds joy in making the videos and if he didn’t then he wouldn’t be making them.

Jordan: Which is totally understandable. With my few subscribers, I don’t really care about them either. It sounds rude when I put it like that, but I basically just make videos because they really are fun to do. I see my “subscribers” as individuals and not just as numbers.

Animal: I wouldn’t say I really do anything interesting on Roblox. Some might argue that me being able to interview all these great famous Robloxians would be interested but really I think of it just like something to do on the side of something bigger. Only I don’t do anything else.

Jordan: Well, someone DOES have to do it. You’re really good at it too. :D. You deserve more attention, because you get straight to the point and are such a nice person in general.

Animal: I do try and act nice towards people. The problem with becoming famous on Roblox from interviewing people is that people don’t want to read this much. Roblox has a lot of kids which may find reading all of this boring but to an older person it may seem nice to get to know their favorite developer/admin/YouTuber/whoever we’re interviewing.

Jordan: I do find it interesting to read myself, while I am young I seem to be the only one in my class that likes to read :P I do find it nice to get to know these people and getting to know anyone on ROBLOX is really neat to me.

Animal: The one problem I face is that if I don’t get The ROBLOX Archives known sooner or later some other bigger group may come along with this idea and get noticed before us. I saw RoGo has had an interview. But it was very short. Right now I have nothing to fear.

Jordan: Competition? Hmm, well maybe they mean no harm. My personal opinion would be maybe you guys could somehow “Team up”? Maybe interview each other haha.

Animal: Maybe. I once asked Lion2323, who owns RoGo, if he wanted an interview. I was going to interview him on Blox Hunt though. And like 85% of everyone I ask, no reply. The other problem I face is that I get no replies from lots of people because they don’t know who I am. And with the community of today you can’t trust someone with something as strange as asking them if they want an interview.

Jordan: That’s very true. The community these days are a bit shady, asking a stranger on ROBLOX for an interview can come off as a bit weird to them, especially if they’re not famous as I am not famous either :P To be honest, I was a bit surprised when you accepted me for one.

Animal: I’ve also tried to get the interviews more so on Roblox since a lot of people may not have a Twitter. I already put one on the Roblox forums which was hard because the layout was messed up and I had to shorten one other until I had to make it into two parts or just not put it at all.

Jordan: Yeah, that’s something that bothers me about the forums/twitter. I’m not sure if I read that the right way, but you can only type a certain amount of characters on a post?

Animal: Apparently so. Then again I did try to put like a 4 page Google Doc on the Roblox form. I don’t know why I thought it’d work. That day I found out that this wasn’t going to work. Plus, I am not known on the forums. I only forumed like 9 times.

Jordan: Foruming is an interesting thing to do on ROBLOX, there can be a lot of mean people, but at the same time some really cool people. I’m not well known on the forums either, I only have about 200 posts max.

Animal: I always think that my join date makes up for my forum posts. 11/8/2011 is a good enough join date, right?

Jordan: Join dates have never really meant anything much to me, if you’re a nice person I’ll accept you ^.^, but yes that is a good join date. You’ve been around the site for quite some time. My join date makes others wonder how I know some things :P

Animal: We want way off topic. But it was great to talk about the group and other situations. Hmmm. What’s your favorite animal?

Jordan: My favorite animal are Tigers. Such ferocious animals :P They interest me a lot, as well as Sharks do too.

Animal: My favorite animal would have to be a panda. How long were you a noob for?

Jordan: I was a noob for quite some time :P I didn’t fully understand the concept of ROBLOX or what I was supposed to be doing until 2013. I just tried to play with friends. It was the only way I had to talk to friends online without having a Facebook.

Animal: It was nice having you for an interview.

Jordan: Thank you so much for having me! (: Such an honour!

ND: the honor is mine. Happy to be here.

Animal: So what do you do on Roblox?

ND: I am the token Dragon of the company any company worth anything has an awesome dragon. Other then that I am on the developer team currently looking into how to use ROBLOX as an educational product.

Animal: That sounds cool. How's it coming so far?

ND: Awesome! Totally teaching kids how to make games! UristMcSparks is helping me and we are killing it.

Animal: What else do you have planned?

ND: It is classified. But just know it is cool. Cause I am working on it.

Animal: Great. So to more basic questions, what is your favorite gear in the catalog?

ND: NobleDragon’s Noble Dragon of course. Brighteyes made it for me!

Animal: Sometimes I like to think any hat with animal in it is mine :P

ND: LOL

Animal: What's your favorite hat?

ND: To many to list here. There are a bunch that I just love.

Animal: There are a lot of hats. When did you join Roblox?

ND: 2010 February

Animal: I joined 11/8/2011. I memorized it. Actually I really didn't. I just know because I joined one day before Azure Pinstripe Fedora was released. What's your favorite game?

ND: Such loaded questions. Again I have a lot. AR, Death Run, Speed Run, phantom forces, Miners heaven, Angels 15, plus a hundred others I don’t have time to type.

Animal: What's it like being on The Next Level?

ND: Scary at first but now I love it. I get to have some crazy amounts of fun on the show. And people love to see the Silly things Jack and I say.

Animal: The shout outs are great too. I remember once you gave me a shout out. A while ago. Hmm, what other questions. What's it like working at Roblox?

ND: Fast paced and intense but I love it. There are millions of people out there playing ROBLOX and they all expect the best from us.

Animal: How was RDC?

ND: Words can not describe. Putting 75 of the smartest people I have ever met in one room is a feeling you not soon forget. Everyone got along smashingly and it was an incredible event. Both of them!

Animal: I remember seeing you tweet that. So, going to any upcoming makerfaires?

ND: Detroit is in a week and a half. Then New York, Portland and one other is in September.

Animal: I might be going to the New York one. First makerfaire for me. Any advice?

ND: Be ready to have fun!

Animal: Back to more basic questions. What's your favorite color?

ND: Pink and Blues that are close to a dark purple.

Animal: Hmm. I'll ask more questions that you probably get all the time from messages or in games. Will you don8 pl0x?

ND: I will only donate if you donate first and it will only be 10% of the original donated amount after the market fee.

Animal: At least he said yes. Will you friend me pl0x?

ND: Sorry With the limit on Friends I no longer accept all requests.

Animal: Okay. But if you change your mind, my username is AnimalBot99 and my user ID is 21469330. Hmm. Will you join The Roblox Archives? You get this cool rank called Stars. Nexx, InceptionTime, Gordonrox24 and some others joined.

ND: I will think about it.

Animal: Is that the nice way of saying no? Ha. Anyways, what other questions are there. Hmmmm. What's your favorite animal?

ND: Dragon Duh?  Other than that maybe Wolves.

Animal: Will you give me a shout out on TNL? :P

ND: I only shout out people who say something funny in chat and I see it. Got to earn it

Animal: Hmm. Looks like I can go work on my jokes. Anyways, are you looking forward to TNL tomorrow?

ND: Always!

Animal: Whenever I miss one I feel like I (thinking of joke :P)

ND: Does anyone smell smoke?

Animal: Oh no, you must be the joke master. How much does it cost to take lessons? I can give you 5 Tix.

ND: You can  not teach this level of troll. You are born with it and you must continually develop it all your life.

Animal: Words of wisdom?

ND: Something like that….

Animal: But I am just an animal. Which is a troll since it's an animal. I think :P

ND: That is some kind of logic…. Not the right kind I think but some kind.

Animal: At least I can say I interviewed many famous Robloxians? Still not noticed yet. But getting there slowly. Anyways, anything you want to say?

ND: Remember Life is beautiful so enjoy it and never eat yellow snow.

Animal: But yellow is my favorite color. My character is wearing all yellow.

ND: Well My words stand true

Animal: I think that's it. Oh wait. Pl0x stay following me on Twitter :(

ND: Peace out *Drops mic and walks away*
